Become more connected to your food and community by learning the holy trade of shechitah. Upon completing one of Tekumah's training programs, you will be certified in kosher slaughter.
We will be launching our first shechitah program this October in Los Angeles, following the 5773-4 High Holy Days. The program will consist of twelve (12) 3-hour classes over a course of 6 months. At the end of your studies, you will be certified in shechitat ofot (kosher slaughter of fowl).
The course will consist of the following:
We will study all the laws of shechitah from the Shulchan Arukh (simanim 1-28) with commentaries from various poskim.
A major focus of the program will be learning how to sharpen your knife properly, so it is both sharp and smooth (had v'halak). Surprisingly, nearly 1/3 of all time spent learning will be focused on honing this skill, as it is essential to the mitzvah of shechitah.
Finally, we will spend a fair amount of time learning about the anatomy of animals and the actual shechitah process through the use of various audio/visual tools and hands-on experience.
Tekumah is founded on the principal that any Jew interested in learning should be able to. Therefore, our programs are open to Jews of any gender, sexual orientation, and religious observance. While fluency in Hebrew is not required, a familiarity with the language is essential. Many texts and terms will exist solely in Hebrew, though we hope to have an English translation of the essential laws available for those who need it.
Classes will be held on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 - 10:00pm near Pico and Fairfax. Classes are currently scheduled for: 10/22, 11/5, 11/19, 12/10, 12/17, 1/21, 2/4, 2/18, 3/4, 3/18, 4/1, and 4/8. In addition to these classes, we will schedule at least two other days to visit a nearby farm where students can practice with live animals and take the practical part of the final exam. A final written exam will take place on April 29th. Please note, dates and times may change, depending on students' needs.
The cost for the shechitah program is $1,000. In addition to the cost of the program, all students will be required to purchase a kit consisting of a knife, sharpening stones, and the other essential tools required for shechitah (approx. $500). For those who require assistance, need-based financial aid is available.
