A growing number of Jews care deeply about the ethics surrounding food production and that of other essentials. However, those who control the kosher food industry and the other holy trades continue to be unresponsive to these concerns. Furthermore, any individual who may be interested in providing kosher meat or similarly holy items to their community can only learn to do so if they are orthodox, straight, and male.
This is why we have created Tekumah, the first and only Jewish organization dedicated to teaching the holy trades to any Jew interested in learning - regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or religious observance.
At TEKUMAH, we are working towards a future in which it will no longer be necessary to choose between our Judaism and our modern values.
In the coming year, TEKUMAH will start certifying students in kosher slaughter and the scribal arts. We will begin by training rabbis, educators, and other Jewish leaders who will return to their communities and affect positive change in the spirit of our vision.
We aim to offer part-time courses in Los Angeles, New York, and Israel in partnership with complementary Jewish organizations. In time, TEKUMAH plans to expand to other fields of traditional study and offer an online network of Jewish artisans, dedicated to serving and engaging Jews everywhere.
